Historic Flooding Hits Bosnia

Record rainfall has triggered the worst flooding in Bosnia in 120 years. “Three months’ worth of rain fell in three days,” said an Alliance international team member in Bosnia. “It is estimated that 10,000 families have lost their homes and approximately 30 people have died.”

The Alliance partners with local churches, three of which have sustained flood damage. One congregation, located in the hardest hit area, reported that a church member lost her life in the flood.

In addition to flooding in low-lying areas, landslides in the hilly regions have destroyed entire villages. Local media report that flooding has unearthed land mines buried during the region’s 1990s war.

“The Evangelical Church has many years of experience in relief work,” our worker observed.  “Church volunteers provide the added dimension of spiritual care. They bring help and hope to devastated families.”

CAMA (Compassion and Mercy Associates), the development and relief arm of The Alliance, is assessing the needs and preparing a response.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
