Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

Bruce was away from Paraguay for two weeks in September to attend the funeral of his Dad, Robert E. (Bob) Harmon who passed away in the Los Angeles area on September 12.
Meanwhile, Sylvia stayed in Paraguay continuing our immigration procedures, following up on renting a house and attending a portion of an “Encounter with God,” a discipleship retreat for new believers in the Lambare Alliance Church where we are beginning to be involved in ministry. The twenty-four participants were challenged to renounce sin and fully commit their lives to following Christ. It was a powerful experience for each one.
Thanks to excellent prep-work by our Field Director couple Bob and Brenda Boston, we looked at several houses during our first few days in Paraguay. In fact, we had made a “final” decision on a house to rent within five days of landing in the country. But after a several days preparing our “application to rent” and nearly two months waiting for relatively minor repairs, even our patience ran out! Now, we have decided on another house, spoken directly with the owner, and have hopes of moving in some day.
Yes, we are buying a car as well. We have decided on a ’99 Toyota Rav 4. But here in Paraguay nothing is as simple as it would seem. It requires the signing of a temporary and then a formal contract, a title search like a real estate purchase in the USA and I don’t know what all other steps. After one week even the temporary contract had not been signed and not a cent paid! We will need additional contributions of a few thousand dollars to our “vehicle special” fund to repay what the mission is advancing for the car, taxes and transaction costs.
We enjoyed several days in October gathered as a missionary family learning better relational skills from our Regional Director, Bill Mangham and his wife Ann.
We are excited about transitioning into the work at Lambare Alliance Church on the south side of Asuncion.
New Beginnings
After twenty five years of missionary work in the Philippines we are undertaking a whole new life, as it were, by taking a missionary assignment to Paraguay in South America. “Life begins at forty,” they say. Our new life begins at 57 & 58 respectively! After one year of Spanish language study in San Jose Costa Rica we will proceded to Asuncion, Paraguay on August 28, 2007. We expect to work in the still-new Lambare church there.
On the Job
Our second daughter Carol is staying in the United States where she works with challenged kids and young people as therapeutic support staff in the Harrisburg, PA area. She greatly enjoys her work with the kids.
Grandparents!
You should see our grandson Isaiah Matthew Beack, first son of our oldest daughter Becki. He was born on Jan. 20, ’06 and at about 1 1/2 is a whole lot of fun. Becki’s husband Matt is son of retired C&MA missionaries to Indonesia, David and Valerie Beack. Matt and Becki feel called as missionaries to meet the overwhelming needs of the third world’s poorest children and young people.
We want to thank you all for your concern for us and especially your prayer. We are profoundly aware that our presence here, health, and every accomplishment is the result of your prayer for us. Thank you all, too, for your gifts to the Great Commission Fund of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. These gifts sent us to the Philippines, keep us here in Costa Rica and, we firmly believe, will take us on to Paraguay and effective service there.
Living the call together,
Bruce and Sylvia Harmon

Prayer Requests/Answers to Prayer
Thank you for your prayer in our behalf.
Please keep praying that:
• we would be able to understand and be easily understood by people speaking to us in Spanish.
• we would begin having an impact for Christ on people’s lives. Both within the church and in reaching those who do not yet know Christ in a personal way.
• we would soon be able to move out of the guest house we’ve been staying in and into our own rented home.
• the purchase of our car would be completed soon.

Pray.
The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals.
Give.
You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This fund finances our missionaries, allowing them to focus on ministry rather than raising their own support.
Serve.
