Prayer Letter/Ministry Update
NOVEMBER 2009 EMAIL FROM OBERGS IN BURKINA FASO, WEST AFRICA
WELCOME!
To those of you who have just signed up to receive our email updates, welcome! To those of you who replied to us and are continuing to receive these emails, thank you! We still consider prayer to be the key to what God is doing in the Kenedougou region in Burkina—thank you for your participation in this important ministry!
NEWS FROM THE KENEDOUGOU!!!!!!!!
Our Burkina field director, Steve Nehlsen, was able to gather together some information from the Bobo district president, Pastor Bamiky, for us about what has been taking place in the Kenedougou region since we left. We praise God that believers are standing strong under persecution, that the power of the enemy is decreasing, and that God’s kingdom is continuing to advance. But there is much to pray for! I’ll enclose the update that Steve sent to us (with a few added notes of explanation).
1. Just about a month ago, Pastor Francois in Sirasso told him that they brought him a sick person from a nearby village and asked the Christians to pray for his healing. The person died and the Christians took the body to the village for burial and used the occasion to preach the Gospel. The dead person’s whole family and several others in the village committed their life to Christ.
2. Dingasso – There is an active group growing there. They have 20 people in baptism classes right now and Pastor Samuel has requested a pastor to be considered for there. Persecution is on the rise. Young Christian girls are being forced into marriage with pagan husbands.
3. Siri - 1 young man was kicked out of his family and his cart, cattle, and wife were taken away from him. The district helped him with acquiring a new field and farming it this year.
4. Another young man in Dingasso was bit by a snake and his family refused to help him. Someone brought him to Bobo and the district paid 45,000 [about $100] to treat him.
5. The village leaders in Dingasso are threatening to put a young man out of the village because “he is transforming the minds of many of the young people”. His name is Bakayoko.
6. Ndorola – villages around Ndorola are being touched with the Gospel. People are asking about the foyer and what the costs will be. It appears that the district is trying to help Samuel establish a clear plan of operation for this place. [This is where high school students from the Kenedougou region can come and continue their education in Ndorola, staying in foyers (dorm houses) on the church property. This ministry will be overseen by Pastor Samuel and his wife, Elizabeth.] Three young people and their mother were kicked out of their home and the family because of their faith.
7. Sorcerers in the area held a meeting and decided that they would increase their attacks on the church leaders. They also indicated that their sorcery is not working against the Christians. “They must have a stronger “fetish” than we do.”
8. Banzon – Pastor Daniel is still not being accepted there and some of the believers have stopped coming to church. [There was a “split” in the church in Banzon when Pastor Francois was re-assigned to the village of Sirasso, to replace Pastor Marcel who passed away a year ago. Pastor Daniel is the new pastor in Banzon.]
9. Bangasso – growing group of believers. Will need a pastor soon. A blind man in the village is a charlatan (tells peoples futures). His wife has come to faith and now his foretelling isn’t working and he has refused his wife to join the Christians.
10. Were – first believer stopped going to church. This is affecting others.
11. One general prayer request that Bamiky gave was for the protection of the pastors. They are feeling under attack.
Upon reading this information, we were reminded once again of the spiritual battle that we are in. Please continue to PRAY for the believers and pastors who are ministering faithfully in the Kenedougou region. Please PRAY that God would continue to reap a harvest and that His Kingdom would grow in this area. PRAY against fear, weariness, and discouragement, and that God would be glorified.
TOURING THE COUNTRYSIDE
We are still enjoying our fall tour on the road as we have opportunities to share in churches about what God is doing in Burkina Faso. We have made new friends, re-connected with old friends, and have enjoyed exploring new places (most recently a cool Naval museum in Keyport, WA, where the kids got to put on sailor costumes and pretend they were in a command room in a submarine). We have three churches left in our fall tour—Kent, WA; Price, UT; and Richland, WA. (We’ll let you know our spring schedule next month when I get some more dates finalized.) Thank you for praying for us to have safety on the road, to continue to have good health, and to keep “on pace” with home school.
OUTFIT UPDATE
We’re still busy shopping for our outfit that we’ll take back to Burkina (clothing, households, etc.). Later on this spring, we’ll pack those items up and get them to a container that will leave for Burkina sometime this summer. Please continue to PRAY that these funds would come in, and if you feel God prompting you to give in this way, see the financial info below for how to do so. Thanks so much!
Thanks for praying!

Pray.
The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals.
Give.
You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This fund finances our missionaries, allowing them to focus on ministry rather than raising their own support.
Serve.
Is God calling you to full-time service? Do you want to experience missions firsthand by participating in a short-term missions trip? We want to help you connect your passion with God’s purpose.
